Guest Blog: AmyZ!

Petals welcomes BACK our favorite Chi-Town Guest Blogger; AmyZ!

{AmyZ, originally from Ohio, is an amazing artist in the windy city & also works as an archive coordinator @ The Art Institute of Chicago. You can admire her work HERE. Many thanks to Clare Britt for her photography}

Petals: Welcome back to As Good As Her Petals, Amy! We're excited to see you again :)

AmyZ: It is great to be back, Sarah :) Thanks so much for having me!

Petals: What's been going on in your style world since you visited us last (fav new gifts/purchases, revelations, experiments, inspirations, etc?)

AmyZ: My style world has been ROCKED by the Chicago winter! In the past, I haven’t been one to dress appropriately for cold weather, (stubbornness is not my greatest characteristic) but this year I decided to embrace the opportunity to layer, mix and match and have fun with all that winter wardrobes have to offer. I am IN LOVE with sweater dresses. They are warm and comfortable while being super duper cute! I find they are very versatile as well... you can dress em up with black tights and hot shoes or dress them down a bit with fun tights, a thin cardigan and boots. A winter trend I’m in a total groove with is the glorious comeback of leg warmers and thigh-high socks! So fun and spunky! Not to mention *gasp* practical when you want to wear skirts in the winter. I also have a revived love of mini skirts - funny thing to discover in the winter, I know! Mini skirts with a cropped sweater and tights all the way, baby.

Petals: Last time we saw you, you were trying out red lipstick as a new makeup staple, have you stuck with it?

AmyZ: I have stuck with it! It has actually become the style signature I was hoping to create. I really like the idea of creating a signature that becomes your ‘look’. Think Jackie O and her sunglasses or Gwen Stefani with her red lips/sunglasses combo. It’s an easy way to look together no matter what with just one simple constant. I get complimented on the red lips more than I thought I would and have even turned a few of my friends on to the idea of bold lips! One of my best friends in New York went out and bought the exact same brand/color I wear after I had visited :)

Petals: What are you most going to miss in your wardrobe as winter passes us by in the next few months?

AmyZ: I am really going to miss my growing collection of tall socks. But I figure the thinner ones can still get some action in the spring time so not all is lost!

Petals: What are you most looking forward to as spring and summer approach?

AmyZ: I can’t wait to wear my black blazer again. It is such an easy thing to throw on over a cute dress or with some tight pants to really pull an outfit together. I’m also ready to start wearing sandals. It seems that I move from sandals straight to boots and vice versa. Love boots. Love sandals. It’s the in between shoes I struggle with.

Petals: I plan on doing some posts in the near future on style inspiration ~ where do you find your biggest inspirations have come from and what are your favorite places to from which to draw new perspectives?

AmyZ: I’m really into the Mod look of the 60’s. It is such a wonderful aesthetic where edginess and femininity come together in the best way possible! Even in its most outrageous moments, there is still a sleek sophistication upheld. And the ‘cool’ factor is undeniable! I like to keep all these characteristics in mind when pulling together a look on any particular day. I like simple lines and shapes that have a bit of a twist. Edgy without being garish - grounded somehow in structure or color but accented with pattern and/or accessory.

As far as gaining new perspectives, I take in everything my peepers come across! I honestly don’t buy fashion magazines; But, I am a keen observer and am constantly taking note of what various people are donning - whether it be an art student, famous actors, musicians, a sales associate at a boutique, or some anonymous person on the bus. Some of my best fashion do’s (and dont’s!) come from the city streets!

Petals: I believe you also had some gorgeous combat boots on your wishlist, are they still a dream of yours?

AmyZ: The dream has become a reality!! I found some Steve Madden boots that had it all... and got them at a discount! I wandered into Nordstrom Rack (this somehow happens every other week) with no intentions of buying anything. I was checking to see if any new shoes has been shipped in since my last visit and what should I find? The boots I wanted! The only ones of their kind and they were in my size! You gotta love when the universe reciprocates a vibe you throw out. I got them for a little over half of what I would have spent in the Steve Madden store.

...hello...?

The other day P asked if I was suffering from blogger's burnout.
Then he asked, "Are you going to post a picture in a couple of days & say, 'This is not 30-for-30. But I look FLY'?".

The answer to both of these ?'s, gentle readers, is "no". I'm not going to reappear on this blog until I'm back in the 30-for-30 saddle. And I'm not suffering from blog burnout.

What P failed to mention in his line of questioning, was that a good part of the post-plateau falls on his shoulders. He is one busy fellow. And he's my photag.

I've been busy too. I decided that to preserve the integrity of my blog's very essence {fun}, when faced with schedule-mania + the threat of blogger's burnout, I'd just have to know when to say when. But I shall return {soon!} And I would like to share a couple of posts on what I has been storming my creative world in the meantime.

Recently, I had the very distinct pleasure of designing hairstyles for {another} theatrical production at, my alma mater, The College of St. Scholastica.
This winter's show was Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None.

I got to author, craft & execute some super-fun 1930's-40's era hairstyles.

Pictured below are the show's 2 leads, Vera Claythorne & Captain Lombard. For Vera, we first highlighted her dark brown hair {formerly colored for the fall production of Twelfth Knight}. Then, using sponge rollers for prep, we pinned up her curls softly to shape them into a romantic faux bob.

Men's hair is rarely quite as exciting to design, and most of the men in this show had pretty slick, '40's 'do's, but the brunette gentleman on the left did shed his shoulder length, gorgeous curly locks for this role. And the inquisitive bloke in the front did a fabulous job taming his fine feathers into this polished look. There were 8 men total that were designed for.

It's hard to see the 2nd actress's hair in this shot, but she played the thin-lipped spinster, Emily Brent, her hair was set in pin-curls that formed a headband-like shape in the front with a severe, low bun in the back.

The show was wonderful and sold out the entire second weekend. Nothing like a good murder mystery to warm your blood on a cold winter's night.

::Twelve=of-Thirty::

I'm not even half way yet. I feel the way marathoners must feel on their 12th mile -- save for all the sweat, training, hard work + physical demands.It was warm out today! It got up over 40 and it was sunny, there was snow melting, snow melting sounds, and thawing smells {which are not all nice, but are all exciting}, hooray!

I love Valentine's Day. A lot. We had a wonderful & perfect one. I won't say too much about it {to avoid the barf factor}, but details-spared; we exchanged gifts + cards, had dinner and watched a movie. The gifts we gave each other were both for things we get to go do as a pair at later dates ~ which, to me, shows how much we really like each other.

::Ten=of=Thirty::

This is the outfit I wore to P's closing night of Frost/Nixon. It was amazing. The show {which was already great at opening} grew by leaps & bounds. I had the distinct privilege of sitting in the front row and watching my dashing husband {+ the rest of the amazing cast} all up-close and personal-like. Afterward, I got to go to a party with all my new friends from in town as well as my old besties from out of town. Everyone in one place!

It was phenomenal.

We also stayed up rrrrealllly late. Three nights in a row. I haven't done that in a long time. My voice is still scratchy.

::Nine=of=Thirty::

Finding Friday duds that match up to my typical jammie-level comfy-ness has been especially difficult during this challenge. This outfit did the trick this time around. I borrowed the scarf from my bestie who was staying for the weekend. When I woke up in the morning and was searching for a scarf, I just couldn't seem to find one that popped enough. I went with tan first, but I looked like I was, as she so aptly phrased it, "celebrating Neutral Day". She loaned me this Caribbean colored piece instead.

::Eight=of=Thirty::

This is one of my favorite dresses. It was given to me as a birthday gift from my bestie a couple of years ago. It's very lightweight, so it's great for the summer. But I like to rock it in the winter too.

I saved this dress for this particular day in the 30-for-30 because the very friend who gave it to me is coming to visit! I'm so excited!! We're seeing the And Then There Were None {the show that I have been designing & executing '40's 'dos for} and we'll be seeing P's show, Frost/Nixon, with the lovely, amazing JennieB & her main squeeze.

When I first chose this, I had P tell me what color tights I should wear. He said, "red comes to mind". I concurred. Then I grabbed this peachy scarf. He said, "You're such a daredevil." To which I replied, "I'm not jumping out of an airplane." Color swatches must terrify some people.

::Seven=of=Thirty::

I am SO excited! My two besties are coming to town this weekend to see P's show and enjoy some fun & frivolity. It's going to be great! One of the two is actually rolling in tomorrow, so today kind of feels like Friday. Even though it's Wednesday. It's going to be a zany rest of the week here as I work, prepare for guests + finish up dress rehearsals of the show I'm designing hair for {1930's-40's era 'dos ~ super fun!}

...and it's going to be soo worth it!

This is my first non-planned-ahead combo of the challenge. I haven't worn this skirt at all yet, though I have recently rocked this blouse/vest combo -- and I'm not sure how I feel about that repetition. But I guess the challenge is to be creative & have fun, not to try to make a reverse-rubix cube mathematical proof out of my closet. So, I will try to wear my duplicated top pairing with glee. I did feel drab in the gray + plum + olive mix, so I added the cobalt tights to brighten it.
