Eggplant 'n' Olive

Some outfits virtually create themselves, after a main piece or 2 are selected, & perhaps some circumstances of the day at hand are considered (weather, agenda, mood) many wardrobe choices simply fall into place. In other cases, with a few items chosen, the details can become more difficult to determine. This is the kind of wardrobe challenge that I welcome, as I see these opportunities to be the real design-muscle-flexing moments. The right mix of colors, textures, accessories & unexpected details have the gravity to carry a wardrobe moment over from nice to extraordinary, from simply put-together to unique & fresh.

Monday's outfit had the luxury of starting out with a great foundation, I already had 3 separate pieces - floaty eggplant blouse w/ grommets, extra long gray dress pants & structured olive vest with embellished trim - a great balance & variety of shapes & textures. But my challenge is that the colors pretty somber when all next to one another. While I love the richness of the eggplant + olive, the gray pants (and brown shoes I was immovable about absolutely wearing) left for a considerably muted palette. The electric blue necklace pops off the dark background while also giving a more playful vibe to a more serious outfit (relatively speaking), the wing earrings echo the teal necklace & also thicken up the accessory department with their shiny, heavy quality. When choosing a long-sleeved shirt for the bottom layer, I went with the blue/gray because of it's shape despite it's dark color, the belled out sleeves are more flattering than a typical long sleeved tee, and the boat-neck prevents the "too much tee" look I'd've had with others too.

The bag is the same as before, but with a different shell. I just got this one yesterday from my mom as an early birthday present. It even came with an alternating ribbon/bow!
